Pesticides and fertilisers used on crops blamed for sharp rise in premature births
Doctors are blaming the levels of pesticides and fertilisers used on crops for the growing number of premature babies. Recent research by Prof Paul Winchester said the level of premature babies born each year in the USA and UK had stayed constant until the Eighties after which there was a steady rise - caused by more intensive crop spraying. His findings - presented to the Paediatric Academic Societies' annual conference in Toronto - match recent Danish research published in the British Medical Journal.
